Glendale Guide for Canadian Investors

Once touted as “Arizona’s Antique Capital,” Glendale – the state’s fourth-largest city – now boasts a sports and entertainment core that rivals that of any city in the state, including Phoenix and Scottsdale.

Just ask those who attended Super Bowl XLII.

Glendale prides itself on services and amenities that surpass those offered by other Valley cities. With two major stadiums, Jobing.com Arena and University of Phoenix Stadium, a historic downtown, a botanical garden and 1,000 acres of desert preserves, it’s easy to see why. The city’s balmy temperatures and clear blue skies serve as the perfect backdrop to more than 60 parks and two municipal golf courses and help enhance signature events, such as Chocolate Affaire and Glendale Glitters.

And don’t forget sports, because Glendale is home to the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals, who play at University of Phoenix Stadium and the NHL’s Phoenix Coyotes, who play at Jobing.com Arena.

Sparked by the stadiums and Westgate City Center, Glendale quickly is becoming a regional economic force. The city’s stretch of the Loop 101 corridor is home to hotels, shops, restaurants, office parks and distribution centers. And Glendale Municipal Airport provides performers, sports fans and executives a much shorter route to the city’s entertainment venues.

The bustling Bell Road corridor features Arrowhead Towne Center mall and many dining options, while historic downtown Glendale offers quaint mom-and-pop antique shops and down-home eateries. Glendale’s largest employer, Luke Air Force Base, boasts 8,400 military personnel and civilians. Honeywell and Banner Thunderbird Medical Center aren’t far behind. The annual Fiesta Bowl and other mega-events will only raise Glendale’s profile in coming years.

But the city is also known for its affordable housing. Glendale offers diverse living options for its 250,000 residents. Spacious properties hark to the city’s agricultural roots, while quaint bungalows sit off tree-lined streets in historic Catlin Court near the city’s Midwestern-style downtown. But those looking for a modern feel can head west to the sports and entertainment district that’s surrounded by bustling urban development or to the higher-end homes at Arrowhead in northern Glendale.

Educational opportunities also abound. Students in Glendale typically attend Glendale Elementary, Deer Valley Unified and Glendale Union High School district public schools, which combined serve more than 60,000 students. High-school offerings include advanced placement courses, career and technical training, and an award-winning fine arts program. Glendale Community College is a popular choice for those seeking occupational certificates or associate’s degrees or those hoping to transfer to a four-year university. Midwestern University houses the state’s largest medical school, and Thunderbird School of Global Management is recognized for its topnotch MBA program.
